Readers worry about Derby’s utilities as 800 home plans cleared

Plans to build hundreds of homes on the outskirts of Derby have been met with concern. Readers of Derbyshire Live said they were worried about the impact it would have on public services.

Permission to build 800 houses between Chellaston and Boulton has been granted in four different stages by Derby City Council and South Derbyshire Council. The first phase of development, Snelsmoor Grange, was granted by Derby City Council in November 2019.

Readers are concerned that the housing numbers are putting a strain on utilities and traffic routes, and causing environmental problems in the area. Louise Radford said: “It’s concrete over the Derby campaign and then complaining about a generation of deteriorating sanity because all you can see is concrete. Don’t complain about destroying the planet and rip every piece of green for miles around.”

Catherine White said: “It’s a shame it destroyed Chellaston in particular. We lived in the center of the old village for 28 years. We had to leave in 2016 for traffic jams through Chellaston when we couldn’t get out our car our I appreciate that people need housing.

“I just hope they build more of everything, including doctors, hospitals and schools,” said Neil Beeston. Valérie Berry commented: “I think we have to build another hospital.”

The Snelsmoor Grange development will include a primary school and a 350 pupil nursery which could be open by 2023, according to the developers, Bellway. The development will form part of a four-part site between Chellaston and Boult and will be known as Boulton Moor.

Paul Coleman, Chief Executive of Bellway East Midlands, said: “Derby City Council’s resolution to grant planning permission for this new residential development in Chellaston is very welcome to all who have worked so hard to propose the proposed project. We worked closely with Clowes to secure this deal, building on our longstanding relationship with the team on site.

“Bellway is eager to deliver the new Snelsmoor Grange development and will announce further details of the project once construction work begins on the site in the near future.”
