$6.6M project to upgrade laundry facilities

The Bermuda Board of Hospitals [BHB] said they had “launched a $6.6 million project to renovate its aging laundry room.”

The laundry and laundry service has been installed in the basement of the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital [KEMH] General Wing since the facility was built in the 1960s.

“Renovation of this area is necessary as the infrastructure is almost 60 years old and failing,” said Preston Swan, BHB’s interim chief operating officer.

“This department handles all laundry for our two hospitals, KEMH and the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute. On average, 5,000 to 6,000 books are processed daily at the facility.

A spokesperson said: ‘The old facility closed in early July to facilitate the upgrade and has a completion date of December 2022.’

“New hot and cold water mains, steam mains and waste ducts will be installed to replace the aging infrastructure,” said Ellsworth Wainwright, BHB’s principal engineer.

“The old boiler room building will be demolished and a new building will be constructed to house the new hot water system, allowing the clothes washers to operate more efficiently,” he added. “These efficiencies will reduce costs.”

“We have experienced complete equipment failures on several occasions over the past year, putting the organization at risk to be able to deliver on our mandate,” said Jerome Swainson, Director of Hotel Services at BHB. “The new modern equipment will improve the efficiency of wash cycles, the use of water and chemicals, as well as a reduction in energy consumption.

“Additional savings will be realized through reduced overtime, overtime and outsourcing due to frequent equipment downtime over the years.”

A spokesperson added: “The laundry and linen service has 33 employees, all of whom remain employed within BHB during the refurbishment. Most of the staff carry out their usual tasks, such as sorting, folding and distributing, from a temporary workstation created in another area of the basement.

“A few laundry operators have been redeployed to one of the external contractors, who have been retained to wash BHB’s laundry while the renovations are underway.

“Greymane Construction is the general contractor for the project.”
